Although some of the following may seem obvious, they're easy to overlook in the lead-up to your move.

DON'T OVERFILL BOXES
Remember that they have to be lifted. The removal men are fully trained, but aren't supermen! Additionaly, boxes that are over filled may break with too much weight.

DON'T UNDERFILL BOXES
This may sound contrary, given the above, but partially filled boxes may collapse if heavy items are placed on top of them. Try to distribute your items evenly in all boxes.

ENVIRONMENTAL
If you write on the adhesive tape rather than the box itself, this will enable you to use it again. Detail the contents and if possible the room in which the box is to go in your new home. Mark FRAGILE if applicable.

FRIDGE AND FREEZER
Remember to defrost your fridge and freezer no later than 24 hours before your move, wherever possible and ideally run down the contents in the 2 weeks prior to your move.

APPLIANCES
Kitchen appliances such as fridges, freezers, dishwashers and washing machines must be disconnected, drained and in a dry state before the removal team arrive.

GARDEN TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT
Ensure that any petrol driven devices have been drained of fuel before the move.

ELECTRICAL ITEMS
Disconnect all Tv’s, video’s, DVD’s, computer’s, etc and label the cable for easy reconnection.

BEDS
Most beds require dismantling before they can be moved. Please ensure this has been done before the removal team arrive.

PARKING
Organise parking space for the removal vehicle before the removal team arrive. Speak to the local Traffic Warden if necessary as they will be able to help with this.

FLAT PACK (self assembly furniture)
These items do not move well. It is a good idea to dismantle them prior to your move. They will have to be reassembled in your new home, so make notes of reassembly if you don't have the original instructions.

PLANTS
If you have plants, you may want to consider moving them beforehand or leave them with a friend or neighbour. A removal vehicle is not the place for them!

NEWSPRINT
When packing valuables/fragile items, remember that newsprint will rub off. Use bubble wrap, plain paper or wrap them in kitchen roll first. The box containing these items should be marked FRAGILE.

PACK AHEAD
Start packing at least 2 weeks prior to your move keeping only essential items aside until the last few days

IMPORTANT DOCUMENTS/ITEMS
Keep them all together in a separate box. These will include documents relating to the house sale and your removal, cheque books, bank/credit cards, keys, phone numbers, mobile phones, etc.

PAINT AND OTHER LIQUIDS
Ensure that they are contained in a leak proof container (no flammable liquids will be allowed in the removal vehicle).

FOOD
All food should be removed from cupboards and packed before the move. Please ensure that caps and tops are secure.

IMPORTANT
Cancel milk, papers, etc. If you have cable/satellite arrange transfers. Inform banks, etc of your change of address, the Royal Mail have a redirection service if required. Take final utility meter readings. Inform your phone company. Keep any medication you need (such as asthma inhalers) in a safe place so they don’t get packed.

VERY IMPORTANT
Please do not pack the kettle, cups, tea, coffee, sugar and milk as these items must go out last and come off first. This is essential for a professional removal!!!

FINALLY . . .
Once the van is loaded, walk around the house and ensure all items to be moved are inside the vehicle. This is your responsibility.
